How to move in one week – and pack your house in 7 hours
In our 20 years of marriage, Frank and I have moved a lot. In the past 16 years, we have moved eight times while Frank and I lived here in the States. In 2000, we moved here from Denmark, and you would think that I hate to move by now, but the truth is, I still love it. I think it is the system we use, I can pack our house in just two days, and once I have completed, I can move anywhere, and the entire process will be completed in a week from the time the first candlestick packed into the box to the last picture hung on the wall of the new house. Then I can invite guests for a housewarming party with everything where it belongs.
I would love to share my experience because, for the past 15 years, I have fine-tuned everything. Now I can pack my house in two days, spending three and a half hours a day on boxing it all up – on average. Over the course of two days, I can pack our 2500 sq — ft house and pack 71 boxes in 7 hours.
To achieve this seemingly impossible task, planning is essential, and I start a couple of months before the actual move begins. Here is the schedule that I use.
1-3 months before the move
Before I move, I go through my cabinets to sort out my stuff to determine what to sell, what to donate, and what to keep. I advise people only to keep what they intend to use and the stuff that makes them happy.
Clear your clutter. I normally do this annually, even when we are not moving. But when I am aware that we are moving, I cut a little deeper. As I go through my stuff, I am already thinking about the place that I am moving to.
2-3 weeks before the move
I before I move I begin by looking for an apartment online and then on the weekend we tour our top picks, pick one and sign the lease. Also, I usually have a very strict policy on no storage unit policy.
As I plan for the move, I have this list of utilities or services to book or to cancel for when we move. The list includes gas, electricity, landscapers, insurance, bank, and trash haul.
The week before the move
At this time, I can talk to my friends; ask them what they want to buy. I rely on other people who want what I am selling. Most times, my friends help me organize until every bit of furniture is put up for sale, picked up, and paid for. If I am moving on Thursday, I make sure that on Monday, everything is packed in a box. I make the necessary arrangement to buy necessities like bottled water.
How to pack your house in 7 hours
While packing all our belongings, there is no dilly-dallying. To make sure my attention is not divided, I minimize the time spent watching television, or surfing the internet. I pack everything in labeled boxes respectively, and everything that’s left behind gets a buyer, goes to storage or is donated to goodwill.
